Everyone’s teeth will darken and stain over time. There are a wide variety of things that can cause discoloration. For instance, tobacco, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and darkly colored foods are all known to cause stains. Certain medications, and poor oral hygiene, may be factors as well. If you want to keep your smile as naturally bright as possible, we recommend brushing and flossing daily and avoiding dark foods and drinks.

What Kinds of Stains Are There?

There are two types of teeth stains – intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic stains occur internally and make your teeth appear gray or blue. These can be caused by overexposure to fluoride, oral trauma, or certain medications. Because they are below the surface of the teeth, Dr. Hawkins may recommend using bonding or veneers to treat intrinsic stains.

External stains appear on the surface as yellow or brown blemishes. Treatment for external stains is simple and straightforward. With the help of Zoom chairside whitening technology, we can brighten your teeth by up to 8 shades in just one hour!

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

At Smiles on the Boulevard, we use Philips Zoom whitening technology. Most professional whiteners have a very high percentage of peroxide. Although this compound is safe in small quantities, too much of it can irritate your gums and dry out your teeth. Unlike other companies, Philips Zoom has learned how to effectively use smaller, less abrasive amounts of peroxide in their gel with the help of a special LED light.

To begin your treatment, Dr. Hawkins will apply the whitening gel to the surface of your teeth. Once the gel is in place, she will shine an LED lamp over your teeth. This light will activate the gel and help it strip away unwanted stains. She will give you a pair of protective glasses beforehand to shield your eyes from the intense light. In one short hour, we can whiten your teeth by up to 8 shades!
