Dental Fillings

A dental filling is a treatment we use to restore damaged teeth. With this procedure, we can strengthen and support an injured tooth while making it more resistant to infection and decay. Fillings are quick and cost-efficient – making this one of our most popular preventive treatments. At Smiles on the Boulevard, Dr. Hawkins and her amazing team can use dental fillings to restore your smile and make your teeth healthier than ever!

What Can Dental Fillings Treat?

We use dental fillings when a tooth has suffered from minor damage or decay. Dr. Hawkins may recommend this option to treat a cracked tooth or to fill the space left behind after a root canal. Food debris and bacteria often find their way into a tooth via a small crack or opening – making a tooth susceptible to cavities. Fillings can block these entryways and make your teeth more resistant to infection.

What Kinds of Fillings Are There?

There are several types of fillings to choose from, including composite resin fillings, porcelain or ceramic fillings, metal fillings, etc. Of these, resin and porcelain fillings are the most popular.

Resin fillings are made from a composite plastic material that is tinted to match each patient’s natural tooth color. The resin begins as a putty, which Dr. Hawkins can mold onto a damaged tooth. After she has applied this material, she will sculpt it into the perfect shape before hardening it with a curing light. After making a few minor adjustments, your tooth will look and feel just like new! Resin fillings are popular for their low cost and quick treatment time.

Porcelain fillings are another popular treatment option. Because they are made from such high-quality materials, they can be used in the front or back teeth and may last longer than resin fillings. Patients may also find that their porcelain fillings look more natural than composite ones. Porcelain fillings may take longer to install, and are generally a little bit pricier than other options. Together, we can review all of your options and help you find the perfect treatment plan!

What is the Procedure?

To begin, Dr. Hawkins and her team will remove any damaged or decayed material from your tooth. After thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing the area, Dr. Hawkins will begin the installation process. For resin fillings, she will apply the putty to your tooth, sculpt it, and permanently harden it. For a porcelain filling, she will take detailed photos of your tooth to use as a blueprint to design your restoration.

After your treatment, you can enjoy a stronger, more beautiful smile! Although fillings reduce your risk of developing cavities, it is still important to maintain your at-home hygiene routine. Continue to brush and floss daily with fluoridated dental products. To ensure your filling does not break or fall out, avoid eating very hard or chewy foods. If your filling becomes damaged, call us right away so we can repair or replace it.
